Only count real work: stop mouse nudges and mouse jigglers
Some people keep a timer running by nudging the mouse every few minutes, or with a mouse-mover program or gadget. With Only count real work on, that no longer works.
What counts as work
- Typing on the keyboard, clicking and scrolling.
- Moving the mouse across the screen, the way you do when you work.
What doesn't count: small nudges of a few millimetres, mouse-mover programs, and movement in a steady repeating pattern like a plug-in mouse mover. After the idle time (5 minutes by default) with no real work, the timer pauses, and the app says "No real work for 5 minutes. Small mouse moves don't count." The usual I was working, add this time is there when you come back. See Idle time, sleep and working offline.
The apps only count that a key was pressed in a second, never which key. Nothing you type is recorded.
"Still working?"
After 15 minutes (or the time your company picked) of using only the mouse, a small box asks Still working? Press I'm working within a minute and the timer keeps going. The button is in a different place each time, so a mouse mover can't press it. With no answer, the timer stops at your last key press, click or scroll.
For admins: Possible fake activity
Turn it on or off under Settings → Time & attendance → Only count real work. It is on for new companies. It needs Clockade for Mac 1.0.16 or Windows 1.0.13; older apps keep working the old way.
Team time → a person's day shows a Work level: the share of the time with typing, clicks, scrolling or real mouse moves, for the day and on each screenshot.
Stretches that still look fake are marked Possible fake activity, with the reason and the screenshots from that time:
- only the mouse moved, with no typing, clicks or scrolling, for 15 minutes or more (you pick 10, 15, 20 or 30);
- the mouse moved in a steady, repeating pattern;
- the screen hardly changed between screenshots for 30 minutes with almost no typing;
- a mouse-mover program was running;
- they didn't answer Still working? (that time is already not counted).
Marked time still counts until you decide. Press It was work to keep it, or Don't count this time to take it off their day. Both are kept in the audit log, and you can add time back with Edit. Staff don't see marks or work levels.
